Characters

Main characters

Thorfinn (トルフィン)

CV:Yūto Uemura
The protagonist of the story. He is a young Viking born in Iceland. His first voyage with his father, Thors, led him to leave Iceland and work with a group of mercenaries. He lives a rough life without a protector among the mercenaries who repeatedly pillage and wage war. [1]
He spends his boyhood among Askeladd's band of Vikings, in purpose to avenge the death of his father. Thorfinn has blonde hair and brown eyes, with a long and shaggy hair. On the battlefield, he carries two daggers, one of which is his father's memento, as weapons. Having grown up on the battlefield, he is extremely brusque and uncommunicative, but since being entrusted with Canute's personal protection, he has gradually become more outspoken. When he fights in the band, the only interests or concerns Thorfinn had on his mind were the right to duel with Askeladd and yearning for Vinland, which Leif had told him about in his childhood. Although small in stature, he is extremely agile and tough. Using his advantageous strength, he even corners Thorkell once, but his short temper often makes him outmatched. In particular, he is completely unable to defeat Askeladd due to his repetitive fighting habits and simple thought patterns being constantly read by his opponent. [2]

Leif Erikson (レイフ・エリクソン)

CV:Yōji Ueda
A light-hearted Christian man from Greenland traveling the Atlantic Ocean. He tells young Thorfinn stories of his travels in Vinland. He is a righteous man and has been searching for Thorfinn who went off to the battlefield, for 11 years to repay Thors's kindness.
Leif Erikson is known as the first European to reach North America, along with the real-life Thorfinn, who was born in the same age group. [2]
According to Makoto Yukimura, he describes the historical figure of Leif Erikson as one of the most famous Norsemen. However, he imagined that Leif would have been very much less of a warrior. Instead, Makoto had a strong image of an adventurer and a person with a propensity for seeking the unknown, thus fleshing out Leif's character from this imagination. [3]

Askeladd (アシェラッド)

CV:Naoya Uchida
Askeladd is the leader of a band consisting of 100 Vikings. He acts friendly toward everyone he meets, but in reality he is a cruel schemer who will do whatever it takes to achieve his own goals. His swordsmanship is considered one of the best out of the characters. He is also talented at discerning people's true natures. He is specifically skilled at recognizing and manipulating people's talents and personalities. [1]
Askeladd's name means "Covered in ashes" for which the reason is revealed in Season 1. Askeladd has short hair and a beard, and always wears a single plate of Roman-style body armor (Lorica segmentata). He also wears Toga, a semicircular cloth of ancient Rome, on formal occasions. Thorfinn calls him "Baldy". [2]
Askeladd becomes a mentor to train and guide Thorfinn, with Makoto Yukimura's intention to let Askeladd drive the story instead of the young, narrow-minded Thorfinn. In fulfilling this role, he took on the duality of being Thorfinn's avenger and father. Makoto directly describes Askeladd as "Avenger and father, that was the best fit. Do I hate him or love him? Is he a bad guy or a good guy? Is he stupid or clever? The more I drew, the more ambiguous it became as to whether he was a father or an enemy. Askeladd has many such contradictions, but I feel that it is fine to leave it as it is. Askeladd is steerless and has a habit of not listening, but he does play a role and behaves in an interesting way. It feels strange and coincidental to me in producing this character." [4] Askeladd's purpose in life can be summarized as killing everyone he deems not beautiful. His last desire may have been to kill everyone he didn't like, including the Vikings. [5]

Canute (クヌート)

CV:Kensho Ono
Canute is a Prince next in line to take over the Danish throne. Having grown up in a royal family with a harsh regime, he is very timid and does not speak to anyone except his chaperone, Ragnar. [1] He becomes incensed by the provocative attitude of Thorfinn, who is his age, causing Canute to open his mouth to someone other than Ragnar for the first time.
He is a very gentle person who also enjoys cooking, but one of the reasons for this personality is his Christian faith, which King Sweyn has described as the reason for his absolute love for God, calling Him "Our Father" and "Heavenly Father" and comparing Him to his own father. [2]

Thorkell (トルケル)

CV:Akio Otsuka
Thorkell is a warlord with a very large physique and has an inhuman strength. He always wants to fight someone stronger than himself, and he loves war so much that he deliberately turns to the side of the enemy who is at a disadvantage. He is a charismatic figure among the Vikings, with his overwhelming strength and bold personality. [1]

Season 1

Thorfinn (Childhood)

CV:Shizuka Ishigami
A curious and competitive boy living in Iceland who dreams of adventure. He longs to set foot on the new continent of Vinland, which he has heard about from his father, Thors, and adventurer Leif Erikson. Thorfinn searches for a weapon to board his father's ship as a warrior, but...[1]

Thors (トールズ)

CV:Ken'ichirō Matsuda
Thors is Thorfinn's father. He was once one of the captains of the Jomsvikings, said to be the strongest Viking warriors in the Northern Sea, and was feared and called "The Troll of Jom". Having started a family, he grew tired of taking lives, so he faked his death in battle and walked away from the battlefield. He now lives peacefully in Iceland, adored by the villagers. He is worried about his son Thorfinn, who aspires to be a warrior. [1]

Bjorn (ビョルン)

CV:Hiroki Yasumoto
Bjorn is an old and assisting member of the Askeladd band. He is a warrior who does not like to fight for money and throws himself into battle for the love of killing. When faced with an emergency, he eats "Mad Warrior mushrooms," [6] which give him the strength of a monster, and he goes berserk to the point of losing his mind. [1]
Bjorn's berserk state when consuming the "Mad Warrior mushroom" can be explained by the mushroom theory proposed in 1784 by a priest named Ödmann. The mushroom in Vinland Saga is thought to be an Agaric mushroom (Amanita Muscaria), causing hallucinogenic effects. [6]

Season 2

Thorfinn (トルフィン)

CV:Yūto Uemura
He is a young man who has been on the battlefield as a Viking with the sole purpose of avenging his father Thors's death, Askeladd. However, he loses his goal of revenge, and when he is banished from the battlefield, he finds himself reduced to a slave. He has lost his hatred and his will to fight, resulting in him doubting about life's purpose. [1] Having lost sight of his goal of revenge, he lives a life of apathy, but after meeting Einar and engaging in farming, he regains his emotional stability.
On the other hand, he is tormented by his past life filled with nothing but mass murdering, thus having nightmares about his life every night. In a nightmare, Thorfinn meets Askeladd and this reunion causes Thorfinn to realize that he has been living in a cycle of killing and that he has not yet broken free from this cycle. He vows to make a complete break with violence and aims to become a "true warrior" while carrying the regret of having killed so many people. As his mission, he sets his sights on Vinland, far away across the sea, where he will gather the oppressed people of the world and create a "peaceful country without war or slavery". [2]
Through the illustration of Thorfinn's story, Makoto Yukimura wishes to convey a message of how violence and war destroy people. To achieve this, he chose to draw a world full of violence to show the after-effects of war sufferers. [7]

Einar (エイナル)

CV:Shunsuke Takeuchi
A young man with a strong sense of justice, born and raised in a farming family in Northern England. After losing his family in the war, he was bought as a slave by Ketil, and ended up working on Ketil's farm. [1]
Einar has his own philosophy and ethics and is completely unfazed. He is a man without strong characteristics, as described by Makoto Yukimura. [8]

Canute (クヌート)

CV:Kensho Ono
Canute is still the Prince of the second order of succession to the Danish throne. He was originally a coward, but the death of his chaperone, Ragnar, made him determined to live as the heir to the throne. After the death of his father, Sweyn, he began to seek to rule England by military force. [1]

Arnheid (アルネイズ)

CV:Mayumi Sako
She is a kind-hearted woman who, like Thorfinn and Einar, is a slave and serves at Ketil's side. She is a beautiful person that Einar falls in love with her at first sight. [1]

Snake (蛇)

CV:Fuminori Komatsu
Leader of a group of bodyguards who protect Ketil's farm from outside enemies. He is usually an easy-going man, but he has a strong sense of duty and empathy, and is also a skilled swordsman. [1]

Thorgil (トールギル)

CV:Taiten Kusunoki
Ketil's eldest son. He serves as a member of Canute's Kingsguard and is a skilled fighter. He is an outstanding man who combines violence and calmness. [1]

Olmar (オルマル)

CV:Yū Hayashi
Second son of Ketil. He is the next head of the farm, but he dreams of going into battle and achieving military success. However, he is a coward and his swordsmanship is poor. [1]

Thorkell (トルケル)

CV:Akio Otsuka
He is a warlord who remains characterized by the fact that fighting is his life's purpose. After the death of King Sweyn, he became a vassal of Knut and presided over an army. His overwhelming strength and bold personality remains the same. [1]
