Today, the great majority of Libya's inhabitants are Arab,[22] with many tracing their ancestry to Bedouin Arab tribes like Banu Sulaym and Banu Hilal, beside Turkish and Berber minorities. The Turkish minority are often called "Kouloughlis" and are concentrated in and around villages and towns.[257] Additionally, there are some Libyan ethnic minorities, such as the Berber Tuareg and the Black African Tebou.[258]

Most Italian settlers, at their height numbering over half a million, left after Italian Libya's independence in 1947. More repatriated in 1970 after the accession of Muammar Gaddafi, but a few hundred of them returned in the 2000s.[259]
