Deputy Dwight "Dewey" Riley is a fictional character of the Scream film series, created by Kevin Williamson and portrayed by David Arquette. The character first appeared in Scream (1996), followed by four sequels: Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011) and Scream (2022).

Dewey Riley appears in the Scream films as a youthful, twenty-five-year-old sheriff's deputy. He is the older brother of Tatum (Rose McGowan), the best friend of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and develops a romantic interest in an older reporter woman, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). He and Gale share an on-off again romance in the series, eventually marrying and help solve the Ghostface murders in each film with Sidney.

One of the tritagonists of all films, he was originally set to be killed off in the original 1996 film. Wes Craven enjoyed Arquette's interpretation of the character as goofy over the initial scripting of a 'hunky' character and test-screened his survival, to fans' approval. Craven repeated this with the sequel, and the character became a mainstay for the franchise. Arquette's character was parodied in Scary Movie as "Doofy" (portrayed by Dave Sheridan), with his goofy behaviour being a mask, having been a secret third killer all along. This was a nod to fan theories Dewey was a secret third killer in the original film.

In the movie-within-a-movie Stab universe, Dewey is referenced as being portrayed by David Schwimmer. During the production of the original Stab 3 known as Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro, Schwimmer is replaced by fictional actor Tom Prinze (Matt Keeslar) who is murdered by Roman Bridger (Scott Foley).

Appearances

Dewey Riley's first cinematic appearance was in Scream (1996) as Sheriff Burke (Joseph Whipp)'s deputy. He is sensitive towards Sidney whose mother Maureen Prescott was murdered the year before. His sister Tatum, not respecting his authority, attends a party held by Stu. He and Gale enter the party for police protection, and he is later stabbed in the back by one of the killers.

His second appearance was in Scream 2. Dewey now walks with a limp due to a severed nerve. He follows Sidney to Windsor College in Ohio having worried about her since a new murder has taken place. Tensions arise between Dewey and Sidney's new boyfriend, Derek Feldman (Jerry O'Connell). Derek presumes Dewey has romantic interest in Sidney, but Sidney refers to Dewey as her 'surrogate big brother'. Dewey questions Derek's story from his arm stabbing.

He is also resentful towards Gale who shows up on campus for a new story, for her disparaging remarks against him in her successful book based on the previous film The Woodsboro Murders that has turned into a film called Stab. He has memorized these quotations from her book and reads them aloud. Gale apologizes, and her tone softens further when fellow Woodsboro survivor Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) is murdered in broad daylight in close proximity to both of them. Dewey and Gale later have sex, but are chased by Ghostface after discovering they are being watched in a camera. Dewey is repeatedly stabbed and assumed dead. During the end of the film, Gale finds out that Dewey is not dead and goes with him to the hospital to recover.

Dewey's third appearance occurred in Scream 3. Dewey's severed nerve and injuries remain in the film. He is a technical advisor for Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro. However, it is revealed his true intention is to seek out a potential new Ghostface who attempted to steal Sidney's file and find her, as she went into hiding after the events of Scream 2.

Following a time-skip, Dewey and Gale are also no longer together. While Gale stayed with Dewey after his injuries and lived in Woodsboro for a year, which she described as 'dog-years' anywhere else, she left for further career opportunities and described the pair as being 'too different'. Dewey aided Sidney in her request for going into hiding, and also saved her file before it was ransacked by the killer trying to find her. Gale and Dewey's second reunion is yet again tense, as Dewey harbors romantic interest in the woman who portrays Gale, Jennifer Jolie (Parker Posey). Gale is attacked by Ghostface, but is saved by Dewey. Both survive the climax in the Hollywood home of John Milton. Dewey also kills the mastermind behind the Ghostface killings, Roman Bridger (Scott Foley). At the end, Dewey asks Gale to marry him, which she accepts.

Dewey's fourth appearance is in Scream 4. Now married for ten years to Gale, he is sheriff and his limp is non-existent following the passage of time and years of physical therapy. His sheriff's deputy, Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton) shows romantic interest in him, baking lemon squares for him much to Gale's annoyance. Despite their marriage, Dewey and Gale come into conflict yet again, as Dewey does not believe she should be apart of the new investigation. Gale goes rogue, leading to her stabbing at a stab-o-thon party honoring the Stab films. Dewey saves her and fires at Ghostface, but he escapes.

Dewey recovers Jill and Sidney, the only survivors at Kirby's house. Sidney is in ICU and Dewey alerts Jill of this, unaware she is the mastermind. Gale realizes Jill is the killer in a conversation with Dewey as he recalls her matching wounds, and they go after her. Dewey is hit over the head repeatedly with a pan and used as a bargaining chip against Judy and Gale. But Gale distracts Jill long enough for Sidney to shock Jill with a defibrillator before shooting her in the heart. Dewey wakes up amid this.

Casting and development

David Arquette was approached for the role of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) but he asked to read for the part of Dewey after reading the script.[5]

The role, described as "hunky", was considered ill-fitting for Arquette's lean, slender appearance and approach but Arquette was still allowed to audition for the part. Craven appreciated his softer, funnier approach to the character, and gave him the role.

Reception

For Scream 3, Cox and Arquette received the Teen Choice Award for Film – Choice Chemistry.
