Infobox music genre colors

The bgcolor parameter of {{Infobox music genre}} has been deprecated per consensus at WP Music, and can be automatically removed from all instances of this template. There are about 900 transclusions that still have the bgcolor parameter. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 23:21, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Xaosflux: I believe you operate a bot for this? ― Qwerfjkltalk 11:23, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl that's not something I would normally do with User:Fluxbot. — xaosflux Talk 11:47, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Doing... Hey man im josh (talk) 17:38, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. I created a list from pages which linked to the template and then removed it. I did a second pass through of the list just in case, which was a good idea, because I found several instances where the template was used more than once on a page. Hopefully someone can update this link soon just so that I can be sure I caught it all. Hey man im josh (talk) 19:15, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hey man im josh, The parameter has been removed from the list of known parameters and all remaining uses are listed here now: Category:Pages using infobox music genre with unknown parameters Solidest (talk) 12:57, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh that's fantastic. I'll start chipping away at that shortly. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:03, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hey man im josh, Could you also please write regex to remove empty parameters as well while you're removing bgcolor? :) As I've asked to enable empty invalid parameters tracking as well so that would helpful. Solidest (talk) 13:15, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To be quite honest, I'm not far enough in with AWB to know how to properly do that. I would also argue against removing empty parameters so as to encourage others to fill them in. Many editors aren't aware of all the parameters that each infobox may have. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:17, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as for the benefits – that's debatable. They are not forbidden, but in general their usefulness is questionable. We even have tracking categories for blank parameters: Category:Pages using infobox event with blank parameters. And many of these parameters will never be filled anyway for 98% of infoboxes (current year portal / subgenreslist / footnotes), so I usually delete them when I edit infoboxes. (And those who don't know about all the parameters would rather use the visual editor, which shows all the existing ones and corrects formatting errors. And those who edit code are more likely to find a complete list of them) Anyway, I ran AWB from A to C myself with removing them, but you took the initiative further, so it's too late to argue anyway :) Solidest (talk) 13:33, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely debatable, as you said. I can see where you're coming from in your stance, and both sides of it, except for 1 point you mentioned regarding the visual editor. I do not use the visual editor and I'd say at least two thirds of my edits are related to the NFL, and at least half may be related to updating the NFL infobox parameters on articles. I still don't know every parameter but I do make the effort to fill blank ones in that I find when I do see them while editing.
As you mentioned there's a maintenance category for the empty parameters, so you can still remove them if you'd like to. It's just not something I'd prefer to do for the reasons I mentioned. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:53, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done, the whole category is cleared out now. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:46, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Abbreviation redirects for months "month year" format

I've worked on this a little today and quickly realized this is a pretty stupid waste of time for me to do manually when I don't have access to the autowikibrowser. Jan Feb Mar Apr Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec (not including May, since no abbreviation, already 3 letters) then the year do not redirect to the appropriate article in any instance, it seems, based on the few I checked. So now the ones I did today - Jan 1900 to Dec 1902, and only "Jan" - no other months - for years 1903-1949. might be the only ones existing. so there are 119×12=1428 articles that should have these redirects from 1903-2022, minus the Januarys to 1949, so at least 1382 needed. Format "Jan 1950" redirect to article "January 1950", other examples "Oct 1964" "Dec 1979" "Feb 2010" "Sept 1989" "Aug 1990" "Jul 1932" "Jun 1924" "Jan 1974" "Sept 1937" "Mar 1944" Led8000 (talk) 03:13, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Led8000, I don't have time to do this now, but I'll try to get it done by the end of the day. ― Qwerfjkltalk 06:06, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Why? Why do we need this many redirects? Primefac (talk) 09:25, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also not sure that this is of any benefit, but if it is:
Certes (talk) 12:33, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Certes, presumably one of the double redirect fixing bots would fix this. ― Qwerfjkltalk 20:23, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Probably. I'm not sure how clever they are about section redirects. But it would be better to get it right first time, if it's wanted at all. Certes (talk) 20:39, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would say use {{subst:Module:Redirect|main|target}} but I think that strips sections. ― Qwerfjkltalk 20:58, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like this task needs consensus first. Rosguill, any thoughts on whether a series of redirects like this would survive RFD? –Novem Linguae (talk) 21:42, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
They seem harmless and slightly useful to me. signed, Rosguill talk 22:54, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's good enough for me. I'll start work on this tomorrow morning if nobody else does (feel free to if you want to). Hey man im josh (talk) 00:42, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did say I'd start on this in the morning, but honestly, I think this might be a little much for me to take on. I'm not actually sure how to properly automate this after giving it more thought. Hey man im josh (talk) 12:01, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hey man im josh, I've just written a pywikibot script to run on this (code). ― Qwerfjkltalk 14:04, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's awesome, thanks for taking this on! Hey man im josh (talk) 14:33, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Hey man im josh, Thanks, fixed. ― Qwerfjkltalk 15:37, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A request

I am making many edits with AWB on one of the projects that are not in the English language. In one of those projects, I realized that the {{PAGENAME}} function—which is used on thousands of pages—doesn't need to keep in the pages, and I removed it as mass. However, this—along with the deletion of the function—resulted in the same templates being left on the pages. I'd like to clean up them.

To clarify the situation

Before I haven't edited:

===Verb===
{{eu-verb}}
{{eu-verb|{{PAGENAME}}}}

After I have edit:

===Verb===
{{eu-verb}}
{{eu-verb}}

Thank you. --Victor Trevor (talk) 07:33, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking us to do the cleanup? Need more info than this. Example diffs? Link to search results? –Novem Linguae (talk) 07:51, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, @Novem Linguae. I guess I can do this cleaning with a module, but I can't write code. Basically, deleting one of the same two templates on a page --like that, as I've mentioned above. --Victor Trevor (talk) 08:08, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Are the templates always right next to each other and separated by a line break? Could possibly do a regex replace. Search: /(\{\{([^\}]+)\}\})\n\{\{\2\}\}/, replace with $1. Would need a list of affected pages to plug into AWB though. RegEx101. –Novem Linguae (talk) 08:14, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure the exact. I've seen a few revisions that weren't separated by a line break, but it was rare.
Thank you so much for the code. --Victor Trevor (talk) 08:37, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Afghanistan flag change post-Taliban takeover being disruptive on pre-takeover articles (need cleanup)

Hi all, Template:Country data Afghanistan was updated with Taliban's flag as the default following Afghanistan's takeover by them. But articles before takeover should not show Taliban's flag. I see Ashraf Ghani's name alongside Taliban's flag at Template:International military intervention against the Islamic State infobox, while it should use the flag of Ghani's government. There were more such articles I've come across before. If someone can do the cleanup work with AWB, that'd be great. Just add the correct year parameter at the end. Thanks!
