The murder of Umesh Kohle a pharmacist from Amravati in the state of Maharashtra, India was carried out by stabbing on June 21, 2022.[1] The police arrested several people, who according to them, admitted to killing Kohle for what he posted about Nupur Sharma, who was involved in the 2022 Prophet remarks row. The police released CCTV footage that showed the assailants following Kolhe around 10 OM on June 21.[1] The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had take over the probe of the killing to assess any possible links to the Udaipur murder.[2]
Murder
On June 1, 2022, pharmacist Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe was stabbed to death while returning home on his scooter after closing his pharmacy ‘Amit Medical Store’ near Ghantaghar in Shyam chowk area of Amravati, Maharashtra.[3] Kohle's son Sanket and his wife Vaishnavi were accompanying him on another scooter.[4]
Sanket told the police, “We were moving from Prabhat Chowk and our scooters had reached the Mahila College New High School’s gate. Two men on a motorcycle suddenly came in front of my father’s scooter. They stopped my father’s bike and one of them stabbed him on the left side of his neck with a knife. My father fell and was bleeding. I stopped my scooter and started shouting for help. Another man came and the three fled the spot on the motorcycle.”[4]
Kolhe was taken to a nearby hospital but died while receiving medical treatment.[4]
Perpetrators and alleged motive
Those arrested for Kolhe's murder were identified as Shaikh Irfan Shaikh Rahim (35), Muddasir Ahmad (22), Shah Rukh Pathan (25), Abdul Thoufique (24), Shoaib Khan (22), Atib Rashid (22) and Yusuf Khan Bahadur (44), all of whom are residents of Amravati.[1] The police was able to locate the knife used to kill Kohle.[1]
Kohle's brother Mahesh said that Kohle was a good friend of the accused Yusuf Khan, a practicing veterinarian, since 2006.[5] According to the local police, Khan assembled five other and allegedly plotted the conspiracy to murder Kolhe, promising to pay his accomplices INR 10,000 and a safe escape.[6]
Investigators allege that Kolhe was killed in retaliation for a social media post supporting BJP’s Nupur Sharma who had made controversial comments on the Prophet.[7]
